During the course of her duties, she and Jax chase a member of the Black Dragon into Edenia. Once there they encounter Raiden and Liu Kang. The four of them team up against the Fallen Elder God, Shinnok , to free the realm and to prevent him from coming to Earth. After Shinnok's defeat, Sonya and Jax return to Earth, where they find the cyborg Cyrax malfunctioning in a desert.
The two bring the cyborg back to the OIA headquarters where they are able to restore Cyrax's humanity. In return, Cyrax joins the agency. They assume that a new threat is on its way, but without the portals, they have no way to intercept the attack.
Sonya is later visited by Raiden, who asks for her help against the new threat. Sonya agrees to join her old friend and ally, but is concerned that with the destruction of the portals, there would be no way to leave Earthrealm. Raiden instructs her to meet with the other heroes on the island where the first Mortal Kombat game took place. Arriving on the island, Sonya is greeted by Kung Lao.
He seems depressed, but does not offer any explanation. They spar on the beach to pass the time waiting for Raiden, and an explanation. Shortly, a small boat apparently formed of ice, floats to shore. It holds two passengers, Sub-Zero and his pupil, Frost. Sonya is not excited to see Frost. While it isn't really explained, their first meeting was not a pleasant one. Feeling they have a score to settle, the two fight. Sonya wins the fight, easily beating the novice warrior.
Despite Frost wanting a rematch, the others convince her and Sonya that there are more important issues. Raiden then appears and transports the heroes to a celestial portal to Outworld. This is a different type of portal from ones used previously; anyone passing through has to defeat a representation of his or her worst adversary. Sonya assumes that she will be fighting Frost, but is surprised that she instead ends up fighting a complete stranger who has an image of a red dragon on his back.
She passes this test, and continues through the portal to face the deadly alliance. Sonya does not survive this encounter however. The Deadly Alliance's victory was short-lived, however as the Dragon king Onaga arrives, and reclaims Outworld. With his ability to raise the dead at will, Onaga resurrects and enslaves Sonya and the others. Since Sonya and the others appear normal in the Armageddon game, there's a good chance that sometime after being raised, some part of Ermac 's Armageddon ending where he frees her and several others with Liu Kang's help became cannon.
Sonya has returned to Earth after Onaga's defeat with the intention of continuing her assault on both Red and Black Dragon clans. She quickly finds herself forced to focus on the Tekunin instead. During her absence, the Tekunin presence had grown large enough to disrupt Earth civilization, and had violated Earthrealm law by engaging in illegal inter-realm activities.
Sonya is forced to divert all of her resources to the immediate threat, despite her wishes. Soon after joining the fight, she is able to help take down a Tekunin ship under the command of Sektor himself. Despite the destruction of the ship, Sonya sends a team lead by her partner Jax to hunt for any survivors.
During this mission, Jax and his team suddenly vanish from all scanners, and are assumed dead or captured. Sonya then begins to focus on discovering who outside of Earthrealm might be helping the Tekunin. In the course of her search, she discovers a homing beacon that she knows is of Tekunin origin; following that signal she ends up in Arktika where she confronts Taven.
Assuming the worst, she tries to get information out of him about Sektor, the Tekunin, and their plans. Proclaiming she has full authority over him, Sonya is unwilling to trust the Edenian warrior. Since Taven will not yield to her, they fight. Taven wins the fight, but does not kill Sonya, who warns him that she'll be watching him even as she retreats from the fight. Marine, never returned from a covert operations mission, Sonya swore that she would honor his memory by joining the Marines as well.
Her skills and loyalty earned her the respect and admiration of all those who fought beside her, and pushed her through the ranks. Now caught up in mysterious Mortal Kombat tournament, she finds herself in a similar situation as her father. Sonya's story during the first two thirds of the game mostly parallels that of her involvement in the first two games.

If I die, that's fine, but I am not losing anybody else. All you need to know is they're trying to kill me, and probably you too. The merger of the realms is almost done.
The merger is close, we've only got a few days left. Use your imagination. I uh, I owe you one. That tatoo, I've seen it before. However, in the original script, Jade and Sonya were supposed to fight in an underground area, away from the rest of the contestants at Shang Tsung's tournament.
This change was likely made because there is little in-game story to connect Jade and Sonya, and their fight would have little relevance to the plot. According to pre-release material for the 90's Mortal Kombat movie, Shang Tsung wanted more than just Earthrealm under his influence. Tsung also wanted to make Sonya Blade his queen once he had assured his victory in combat.
This doesn't end up happening in the movie, although Tsung does challenge Sonya as an act of desperation and teleport her to Outworld. Tsung shows little interest in Sonya romantically throughout the film, so this was probably the right move. Stryker made his debut as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 3. However, he was originally supposed to be in the roster for the first game. The original game was going to have an all-male cast, though, so the team replaced him with Sonya for diversity's sake.
Stryker, like Sonya, is a tactical special forces officer. However, while Sonya is an Earthrealm special forces officer, Stryker is a run-of-the-mill riot control cop whose prowess earned him contact from Raiden directly.
Sonya and Kano have a long-lasting rivalry going all the way back to the beginning of the game. The main reason for this rivalry is that Kano killed Sonya's special forces partner.
Strangely, this deceased partner appears to have different names in various installments of the franchise. However, he simply goes without a name the majority of the time — even in the Mortal Kombat movie. There has been a long-standing rumor regarding the original Mortal Kombat game.
